A new GOLDEN ERA of DEMOs is here

Demo versions of games - a big hit in around 2000's, when 3D AAA titles grow and it was difficult for a common folk to have a game - go to a physical store, buy a CD, plus most of us were kids or teens and didn't have access to money to buy out the store.

I distinctly remember paper magazines I've been purchasing just for the sake of having appended CD with several game demos. I couldn't wait for every single one of them. I or my parents purchased only the full version of a game if I experienced it and knew it'll be awesome.

Since the internet became mainstream, we have access to everything and magazines with demos became obsolete. Soon after that, community online videos started to grow on popularity and were and are more accessible, than anything. That way it's good enough for majority of us, players, to know if we'll like the game or not.

Indie games are rising

For the last few years, indie (or independent on publisher) games are becoming a thing. There are hundreds of independent game developers creating smaller, yet awesome games.

And they have not the amount of money for marketing like AAA game developers and publishers have. So the game developers searching for creative ways to show their game.

And they found demo versions work really well.

Game DEMOs are growing!

Demo versions are FREE! That is the great thing about them. You can download the game for free and play it for free for limited amount of time or in limited extend. It's up to every developer how they limit their game demo.

Few years or even few months earlier, some demos were available. For example Final Fantasy VII Remake released demo version.

Now, after Gamescom, demo versions are everywhere.

Well, not everywhere. I personally put many games to my Steam Wishlist and most of them has demo.

For example:

Per Aspera: https://store.steampowered.com/app/803050/Per_Aspera/
Project Haven: https://store.steampowered.com/app/443190/Project_Haven/
Lucifer within us: https://store.steampowered.com/app/443190/Project_Haven/

Let's hope this trend is going to be expanding in the next years.
